Weather Checklist

Run this checklist when the news cycle feels “off.” Six signals that an extreme media weather event is in progress. Score each — three or more active signals means you are inside a manipulation window.

Signals

Check every box that applies. The more signals, the higher the manipulation risk.

Signal 1 — Synchronised saturation The same story appears across 5+ outlets within 24 hours, with near-identical framing and sourcing.

Signal 2 — Emotion spike Headlines are engineered for one dominant emotion (fear, outrage, tribal pride). The story makes you feel before it makes you think.

Signal 3 — Binary lock The framing presents exactly two sides. No third option, no complexity, no “it depends.” You are made to pick a team.

Signal 4 — Sourcing blackout Key claims rest on anonymous sources, “reports,” or unverifiable documents. The original source is not named or linked.

Signal 5 — Rhythm change A story you’ve seen before resurfaces with new urgency, or a new story is deliberately timed to drown out a prior one (cathedral effect).

Signal 6 — Action demand The story ends with a call to action: vote, donate, share, protest, block, panic-buy. The narrative is designed to end in behavior, not understanding.

What to do when the weather is bad

Wait 48 hours. Manipulation windows are short. The story’s emotional charge decays fast; the facts don’t.
Find the original document. Not the news report about the document — the document itself.
Check the other tab. Read how the opposite-side outlet covered it. Note what they left out.
